The ecclesiastical calendar observes All Soul's Day on 2 November of the year, unless the date of 2 November falls on a Sunday, in which case the feast is moved to the following day, 3 November. This day is, therefore, a "movable" immovable feast. |

The observance of this day became universal through the influence of Odilo of Cluny, who commanded its annual celebration in A.D. 998 in the Benedictine houses of his congregation. The mass contains the Dies Irae, a famous and powerfully moving sequence. |

The date is a day to honor the dead and commemorate the souls of the faithful departed. Graves are visited and cleaned. Food is offered to the dead souls, who return on this day to visit the living, according to some cultural traditions. In Mexico, El Dia de los Muertos, or El Dia de los Difuntos, is a day dedicated to adults, whereas the preceding day, El Dia de los Santos, is dedicated to children who have died. The pan de muerto, a sweet bread decorated with skulls and crosses, is eaten on this day. |

The origins of this day are lost in pre-history, so the actual range over which this date has historical significance is moot. It is part of the ancient complex of ritual involving veneration of the spirits of the dead, which is expressed today in the form of All Hallow's Eve, All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day. |

A function to return the date for All Soul's Day for a given year is shown below. Note that this routine is a fixed date routine, with the inclusion of a test for occurrence on a given DOW (Sunday). The occurrence results in a postponement of the day. This concept of generating a date, examining it for its DOW, and postponing its occurrence is used extensively in the Jewish calendar. |
