Shevat 15 Laylanot, the first day of the new year of trees. It is unlawful to eat of the fruit of a tree until the third crop is produced. This law is interpreted somewhat liberally, however, in that it is considered lawful to eat of the crop of the third year. The years are reckoned from Shevat 15, so a tree planted any time before that day is considered to have completed its first year on that day. Thus, a tree may be in the ground for a little over a year, and its fruit lawfully eaten. |
