3.) The Greeks, commanded by Antiochus, destroyed the Books of the Law (1 Maccabees i 56). |

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
4.) King Ahaz extinguished the lamp that burned day and night in the Temple. Several authorities agree on Av 28 for the date. |

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
5.) The destruction of the fortifications of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar. This event is stated to have occurred on the ninth of the month at midnight. |

|
|
|
|
Av is the 11th month of the civil year and the fifth of the sacred year. |

Av 9 Fast of Av, observing the decree against the Fathers in the wilderness that they should not enter into the promised land (Numbers xiv 23). The destruction of the first Temple by Nebuchadnezzar took place on the same day in 422 B.C., and the second Temple was destroyed by Titus in A.D. 70 on this day as well. The fast is also called the Black Fast. |
