equinox. In Iran, Naw Ruz is celebrated on the vernal equinox, which can produce a divergence in practice between the Baha'i calendar as observed in the West and the Baha'i calendar as it is observed in Iran (and other countries).
The intercalary period always is fixed to the period 26 February through 1 March. The range thus includes the date 29 February whenever it occurs in the Gregorian calendar. Note that the intercalary period falls close to the end of the year in the Baha'i calendar, but close to the beginning of the year in the Gregorian calendar. Because the leap year rule of the Baha'i calendar is slaved to the Gregorian leap year rule, a consequence is that the date overlap between corresponding years in the two calendars is relatively slight, running from 2 Sharaf (1 January) to 19 Ala (20 March), and thus occupying a period of 79 days in a common year, which is barely more than 20 percent of the total length of the year.
