The mathematically inclined reader will skip a lot of tabular drudge work by simply noting that the desired top row consists of items 1, 25, 49, 73, 97, 121, and 145 in a series that repeats at intervals of seven. These numbers, taken modulo 7, are 1, 4, 0 (or 7), 3, 6, 2, and 5. These integers are the indices for Saturn, the Sun, and so on, in the original table that lists the planets by apparent speed (Table 2.3). |
