HTML Tags HTML formatting instructions are defined by tags. Most tags come in pairs with one tag starting a formatting mode and a corresponding tag ending it. For example, the tag “<B>” marks the beginning of bold text, and the tag “</B>” ends the bold text. The HTML code “<B>text</B>” would display the word “text” in bold characters.
The following list describes the tags used in AppointmentBook’s HTML help files.
- • <HTML>...</HTML>. Surrounds the entire HTML document.
- • <HEAD>...</HEAD>. Contains the document’s heading information.
- • <BODY>...</BODY>. Contains the body of the document. This includes everything after the heading information.
- • <TITLE>...</TITLE>. The document’s title. Web browsers display the title in their banners.
- • <CENTER>...</CENTER>. Centers the contents horizontally in the browser.
- • <IMG SRC=“ApptBook.GIF” ALT=“[ApptBook]” ALIGN=“Right”>. Inserts the image in the file ApptBook.GIF. The value specified after ALT indicates the text that a browser should display if it cannot display the image. Setting the ALIGN parameter to “Right” tells the browser to allow text to fill to the left of the picture. ALIGN can also be “Left” or “Center.”
- • <BR>. Causes a line break. The following text starts on a new line in the browser.
- • <B>...</B>. The enclosed text is bold.
- • <HR SIZE=3>. Creates a horizontal rule (line) three pixels thick. SIZE can be 1 through 10.
- • <A HREF=“Overview.htm”>...</A>. Defines an anchor for a hypertext jump or link. The text between the tags is highlighted by the browser. If the user clicks on it, the browser displays the document specified by the HREF parameter.
- • <A NAME=“Here”>...</A>. Defines the location of the included text within the file as position “Here.” This location can be used by the anchor tag described next.
- • <A HREF=“#Here”>...</A>. Defines an anchor for a hypertext link to the location “Here” within the current document. If the user clicks on the highlighted text, the browser scrolls to the indicated location. The HREF parameter can specify both a new document and a location, as in “Overview.htm#Here.”
- • <H3>...</H3>. The enclosed text is displayed in the browser’s heading level three style. Smaller heading numbers correspond to larger, more important text. For example, <H1>...</H1> produces a very large heading.
- • <P>. Begins a new paragraph. The browser decides how it will separate paragraphs.
- • <PRE>...</PRE>. Preformatted text. The browser displays the text with the exact spacing given in the HTML document including spaces and carriage returns. Text is displayed in the fixed width font so the code can use spaces to make text line up exactly. For example, this code:

- • <!-- ... -->. Comment. The text between the “<!--” and the “-->” delimiters is ignored by the browser.
Contents.HTM The output produced by the file Contents.HTM is shown in Figure 3.8. This page displays a list of important subjects the user might want to examine in detail. Hypertext links are shown as underlined by the browser. If the user clicks on one of these, the browser displays the corresponding document.
