n Huge CPU Cluster Saudi Aramco built a 900-node Linux cluster.
Saudi Aramco's PSTM application runs on a cluster of 900 IBM rack mounted 1U node, each with two 1.4 GHz Intel Pentium III GHz processors with 2GB of memory. The operating system is RedHat* Linux* and the cluster interconnect is 100Mb Fast Ethernet.
The first part of the cluster was based on two-way IBM xSeries servers using Intel Corp's Pentium III processors running at 1.4 GHz. That cluster was eventually upgraded to include 281 xSeries machines using 562 of Intel's 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 Xeon processors. This cluster ranks number 133 on the Top 500 supercomputer list, and currently has a peak theoretical performance of 2.7 teraflops, but on the Linpack Fortran benchmark, it tests out at about 609 gigaflops.

'This is a mission-critical application,' said Mohammad Huwaidi, exploration systems analyst (Application Team Leader for deploying the PSTM on the PC-Cluster) at Saudi Aramco. 'It does some of the most important work in our business.'
With its data volumes doubling each year, Saudi Aramco had to ensure its PSTM application could grow quickly, efficiently and cost effectively to meet its escalating seismic data processing needs and to maintain its world leadership position.
Unconvinced of price/performance of other existing platforms it was using, Saudi Aramco worked with IBM to explore using Intel processors instead. The result was a highly scaleable and affordable cluster of 128 Intel® Pentium® III processors which quickly grew to 1,800 processors as the company validated performance and reliability. And the cluster is still expanding.
Dell got a piece of the action on the Saudi Aramco Lintel cluster a few weeks ago, with the company acquiring an additional 910 two-way PowerEdge servers using 1.4 GHz Pentium III processors.
Those additional Pentium III processors should add another 2.5 teraflops of computing capacity to the Saudi Aramco cluster, with about 520 gigaflops of floating point power as gauged by the Linpack benchmarks. Both pieces of the cluster are running Linux. The cluster will run home-grown seismic and oil exploration applications.
