You put the path to your java compiler in the PATH variable,and also the java interpreter.

From the control panel,choose System,then select Advanced tab.

You will see user variables and System variables.Uder System variables Add the path of your compiler to the PATH variable.This is usually c:jdkx.xxbin

where x is the jdk varsion like:

c:jdk1.3.1bin

(do not forget to put semi column ';' between this value and other values)

Now if you open the DOS window you will be able to compile without having to call the compiler from its folder and also the interpreter (java.exe) works in the same way.

There is another thing which is important.It is the CLASSPATH which tells the java compiler and interpreter where to find Java Library classes.These are stored in Zip or Jar files.It is similar to adding a reference to a library in Visual Basic.To add classes to your class path.Just create a variable called CLASSPATH under system veraibles and add the jar files

Examples:

c:jdk1.3.1libtool.jar

If you open this file using Winzip you will see hundreds of classes packaged inside it.They get called whenever you need a class in your java programme.An example is when you use The JFrame class in a swing Application.
