To optimize your application, you have to profile it to know the methods that has a slow execution and then optimize it or change it.

To do this you use a category of applications called profilers. A profiler tells how many numbers each method is called, how much time was spent in executing each method, and how many processor cycles did each method take. The most advanced and expensive profiler in the world is intel's vTune.It supports .NET too, but it is very expensive- about 700$.

There is a good profiler that supports both .NET and native applications called DevPartener. It has a free comunity edition to download. search for it on google. You can also take a look at AMD's Code analyst, It is free too, but the last version that I used didn't support .NET. may be the newer versions do.

You can use the application center test ACT to test ASP.NET applications specifically. It is a tool that comes with Visual studio that simulates multiple users surfing your website at the same time, to test the performance of your website under pressure of users. but this application doesn't tell you where are the slow methods or the execution time of each method as the profiler does.
