SQL Server Editions

Microsoft has a number of SQL Server editions available, depending on what you expect to use SQL Server for and your expected database and feature requirements. The list of editions has been relatively consistent since SQL Server 6.5 and includes the following:

SQL Server Standard Edition For small- to medium-sized organizations with typical database management requirements supporting up to four CPUs and 2GB of RAM.

SQL Server Enterprise Edition For those organizations requiring more robust database functionality and support for up to 32 CPUs and 64GB of RAM. The database features only available in Enterprise Edition include the following:

Support for active/active and active/passive clustering

Log shipping allowing the creation and maintenance of a standby database

Parallel DBCC execution

Support for parallel execution of CREATE INDEX commands

Enhanced read-ahead and scan capabilities for increased query performance

Indexed views

Federated database server support allowing tables to be logically partitioned over several SQL Servers

Storage Area Network (SAN) support allowing SQL Server database files to reside on SAN storage devices

Support for Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server and Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition operating systems

SQL Server Personal Edition (SQL Server 2000 only) With functionally similar to Standard Edition, Personal Edition is limited in scalability and includes a workload governor that degrades performance after five concurrent Transact-SQL batches. It does not support being a publisher in transactional replication and is intended for mobile users who spend time away from the workplace.

SQL Server Developer Edition Supporting the same features as Enterprise Edition, Developer Edition is limited to 15 client connections and is used for development and testing of SQL Server applications. Using it in a production environment is specifically prohibited according to the terms of the End User License Agreement (EULA).

SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) First released with SQL Server 7, MSDE provides basic database functionality without the administration tools shipped with other SQL Server editions. It is designed as an alternative to the Microsoft Jet Engine found in Microsoft Access for the development and deployment of desktop applications. The database size and functionality is limited to only the core database elements.

لقد قمت بتحميل SQL Server 2000 على Windows XP ولكن أثناء التحميل تظهر رسالة تقول أنه لن يتم تحميل الـ Server وسيتم تحميل الـ Client فقط بسبب عدم ملاءمة إصدار الويندوز. فهل لابد لتحميل السيرفر أن يكون ويندوز 2000 مثلا؟ مع العلم بأنني جربت بأكثر من نسخة SQL Server ودائما تظهر نفس الرسالة.
